Our Foundation is thrilled to count Le Cordon Bleu College of Culinary Arts Miami as a major supporter of the James Beard Scholarship program and helping deserving students fund their education.”
School scholarships are awarded as waivers that will be applied as a credit to the student’s account. Merchant Account Basics for New Business Owners
A merchant account is an account that is established by a business with a credit card provider or processor that enables businesses to accept credit cards as a valid form of payment. While they are a helpful addition to any business, credit card payments are virtually an essential part of any successful online business venture, since the vast majority of online shoppers use credit cards to make purchases. Establishing a merchant account is a relatively simple process, although the terms and fees associated with the obtaining and maintaining an account can be confusing at first, especially to new business owners. The following tips will help define some of these account basics, and help new business owners gain an understanding of the basics involved in merchant accounts.
Application and Setup Fees
Most merchant account providers require a one-time application fee to cover the costs of processing and verification associated with the establishment of your account. This fee may be charged immediately, or may be delayed until after your account is established. In addition, you’ll encounter recurring lease fees or outright purchase fees for any credit card processing terminals your business requires. Some merchant account providers also charge one-time programming fees to install the software you’ll need to process transactions successfully.
Processing Fees
Each time a customer purchases an item using a credit card, a small percentage of the purchase price is deducted and turned over to the merchant account provider. This fee covers the costs of verifying and processing the transaction, as well as any fees associated with transferring the finds from the customer’s account into the merchant’s account. Processing fees can vary based on the individual merchant account provider, so be sure to read your contract carefully to understand all the fees you may be subject to. Fees are also usually higher for online transactions, which are more subject to risks associated with credit card fraud than are brick-and-mortar storefronts.
What happens after a charge is made?
Once a customer swipes his or her card to enters their credit card information at your online business, the card information is transmitted to the merchant account provider, who initiates steps to validate the card and determine that the available credit is sufficient to cover the costs of the purchase. Once the card is validated and the funds are established, the transaction is approved. Following approval, the merchant account provider issues a charge against the customer’s credit balance, essentially reserving these funds to cover the costs of the sale, and issues a corresponding and unique transaction number. The customer and the business owner are informed that the charge has been processed, and the business owner can safely proceed with order fulfillment. Of course, in some cases the card issuer will indicate that a card has been declined. When a card is declined, both the customer and the business owner will be informed and the transaction will be halted.
Credit card charges are typically processed in batches, or groups that are transmitted to the card account issuer, usually at the end of a business day, or for 24-hour and online businesses, at a regularly assigned time each day. Once these batches are processed by the account issuers, the purchase funds will be transferred electronically from the credit issuer to your business checking account that you have linked with your merchant account provider.
Monthly Statements
Just as with a credit card account, you will receive a monthly statement reflecting all your charges and fees that were incurred for that month. In addition, your merchant account provider may also include information that is essential to the management of your account. Be sure to read all paperwork enclosed with your merchant account to determine if any changes are being made with regard to account processing, terms, or fees. If there are items which you do not understand, contact your merchant account provider immediately to discuss and resolve any concerns.
The MPA
Your contract, often referred to as your merchant processing agreement, or MPA, spells out each and every aspect of the merchant account process, including fees and other essential terms and conditions. In most cases, you will be asked to agree to the terms of the MPA prior to application approval, while in other cases, you will agree to terms and conditions following approval of your account, but before your account is actually established and allowed to go “live.” Before signing your MPA, review it and make note of any items or terms which are confusing to you. Contact your provider to clear up any concerns or issues you may have prior to signing the agreement.
Although the merchant account process may sound confusing or even intimidating at first, don’t be discouraged. Merchant account providers value your business, and account specialists can help walk you through every step of the process required for establishing a credit card processing account. With their expert guidance and advice, you can have your merchant account system up and running in no time, and begin the much more interesting process of growing your customer base and your business.

“We wanted to uncover the impact of efficiency on the customer experience with 13 of the top financial institutions’ online checking account applications,” explained Zapata. “Participants attending the show will be surprised to learn that many of these financial institutions are missing-out on several conversion opportunities.”
The efficiency study was calculated using CogTool, a software product developed by Dr. Bonnie John’s lab at the Human Computer Interaction Institute of Carnegie Mellon University. CogTool evaluates a design with a predictive human performance model to predict the time it takes for an expert to complete a task – in this case, to open a checking account online.
The presentation will take place on Thursday, October 21, 2010 from 10:30am-10:50am CST on the Innovation Stage in the BAI Pavilion at Retail Delivery, which will take place at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas, Nevada. Getting A Free Merchant Account
Getting A Free Merchant Account
Get a free merchant account online when you locate interested lenders who want to work with your company. Although many potential lenders charge 0 or more for an online merchant account application, others will forego this fee and some other related expenses in order to attract your business. You can get approved quickly and set up within a few days afterward to start accepting online credit payments. But first you have to make a suitable match with a merchant account services provider who is willing to help enhance your company’s e-commerce capabilities.
You can start your search by checking the larger name banks and lending institutions to find those that offer a free merchant account online. Many offer different types of merchant accounts, but you will have to carefully compare prices and terms to make sure you get a good deal. Even top-name banks are capable of botching a merchant account offer, so don’t choose a bank based solely on its name or past performance. Instead, the terms and conditions of its merchant account application. Make sure to ask about costs that are not included on the price list, and get a reply in writing that you can keep on file for future reference if needed. Click through each page of the Website where merchant accounts are featured to be sure you understand all the details of this important privilege. Look for a company that offers the best payment method for your business interests. For example, some require a fee-per-transaction payment, while others bill your account at a low monthly percentage rate. You can always discuss either or both options with the lender’s customer service representative if you aren’t sure which one will work best with your clients.
After selecting the best free merchant account online offer for your business, process your application online, if possible, or print and complete it before mailing. Within a few days you should receive an email or postage reply to confirm or reject your application. If accepted, you can immediately begin to set up credit processing services for your customers. Discuss your equipment needs with the lender to decide the best direction for your company. For example, you will probably want to establish a Web presence unless you already have done so. When your Website is up and running, you can add credit processing options to it so that shoppers can browse anytime, shop at their leisure, and pay by credit card. You won’t have to hire customer support to be available 24/7 at your Website, although it is a good idea to have someone on call from time to time or as needed to answer shoppers’ questions or to address unexpected glitches. Your Website credit processing link will let customers enjoy the ease of ordering and paying from their homes, their jobs, or anywhere else they can find a computer a few minutes of browsing time.
Take steps now to learn more about how to upgrade your customer payment services when you apply for a free merchant account online.

Non-Chexsystems Banks – Tips on How to Find One

Banks are going through a major transformation as we speak. We are currently going through a period whereby banks are being scrutinized more than ever by legislators, by securities commissions, by the media, and by consumers. Banks are being asked, more than ever, to be held accountable for their actions.
In addition to the well-known problems in recent years concerning sub-prime lending, banks are also fighting another battle: that of deciding which prospective customers should be considered as low versus high-risk customers.
If you have been rejected for a new checking account in recent days or weeks, you are probably experiencing a lot of frustration. The truth is, your rejection is likely due to your name having been reported to something called Chex Systems.
What is Chex Systems?
You may have already heard of Chex Systems but not known exactly what it means. It was created by a company called eFunds several years ago. In essence, it is simply a database that banks use to report to each other about customers who have displayed risky banking behavior in the past.
Unlike the FICO or credit score, the Chex Systems does not use a scoring system. Rather, if your name merely appears in the database, you will likely be rejected for a new account by any inquiring bank.
The risky behavior that triggers a bank to report a customer’s name to Chex Systems might include something serious such as bank fraud. But, it can also include behaviors like not paying back your bank after a questionable overdraft fee was assessed against your account, or it could have to do with questions about the way you were using your debit card.
Why Banks are Using Chex Systems More than Ever
Given all of the scrutiny banks are under from the government, they are using Chex Systems more than ever when deciding whether they will approve a new account application. In fact, about 80-90% of all banks refer to Chex Systems when evaluating new checking account applications.
The Good News: You Can Escape!
If your checking account application has been rejected more than once, you are probably feeling very frustrated about your situation. After all, not being able to get a new checking account can really put a cramp in your financial life. And while it is almost impossible to get your name removed from this database, there is a loophole: you can find a bank that does not refer use Chex Systems at all. Such banks are out there, if you know how to find them.
How to Find the Right Non-Chexsystems Banks
To find a non-Chex Systems bank:
1. Look for banks that bill themselves as “second chance checking” banks.
2. Create a list of at least 5-7 candidate banks before deciding upon which one(s) you will approach for a new account.
3. Your candidate list should include a record of the most important features of any bank account, including fee structures, special offers, and terms and conditions.
4. When you do get approved for your new checking account, be sure to read the fine print before signing on the dotted line.
Cutting through the banking clutter requires that you rise above the politics of banking today. Find a second chance checking bank and get the peace of mind in knowing that they will not reject your application.

Banking shouldn’t be a mystery, but for most of us, it is. Locating a good bank, applying, getting approved, and using a bank on a daily basis should be a piece of cake, right? Unfortunately, the reality of banking today is far from being easy for most people.
More Complicated than It Needs to Be
In theory, banking is a pretty simple concept. You have some money or you get paid and you want somewhere to keep it safe and sound. You need to be able to access your money when you need it, either in the form of paying bills, making charges, or withdrawing cash directly from your account. And, you don’t mind earning some interest on your balance.
The reality is quite different. It can be hard to get your checking account application accepted. Even when you do successfully open an account, you have to put up with overdraft fees, checking account fees, cancelled check viewing fees – you name it. Sometimes, it can feel like the bank is not really your friend at all. Which means that, for most people, the relationship they have with their bank is a love-hate relationship.
Reason it Got This Way
If you are wondering about the reason things have gotten this way, you will need to look to a number of important trends that have hit the banking industry over the past few years, including:
* overdraft protection programs: This is a wonderful idea, but in reality it ends up costing many bank customers more than it saves them due to the effect of overdraft fees.
* debit cards: These cards allow you to make charges against your account even when your balance is near zero or in the negative. Combined with overdraft protection, failing to use your debit card with the highest degree of caution can cost you hundreds per month in overdraft fees.
* Chex Systems: This is a database that most banks use to report current or past customers who in the bank’s eyes represent a risk. And, about 90% of banks refer to Chex Systems when evaluating a new checking account application. If your checking account applications have been rejected recently, it is likely that your name has been reported to this database.
That First Step is a Doozy: Difficulty Getting Approved
If you have been reported to Chex Systems, you will have a very slim chance of getting your checking account application approved by any bank that uses Chex Systems. And not being able to get approved for a checking account by one or more banks is not only frustrating, it is a bit humiliating. Basically, without a checking account, your entire financial life is put on hold.
About Non-Chex Systems Banks
Fortunately, there are a handful of banks out there who do not use Chex Systems at all. These banks call themselves “second chance checking” banks. As the name implies, they are happy to offer checking accounts to anyone, even people who been reported to Chex Systems in the past.
Second chance checking banks offer all of the same perks and benefits of other banks.
How to Find a Second Chance Checking Bank
To find a second chance checking bank that does not use Chex Systems, follow these steps:
1. Create a spreadsheet or list on paper to record your candidate non-Chex Systems banks.
2. Make a checklist for each bank. For each bank you evaluate find out whether it is FDIC-insured. Look into their fee structures. For example, will they charge you a monthly checking fee? Do they have an overdraft protection program? Are they offering any promotions right now that would give you incentive to open an account?
3. Choose the best bank and apply.
Once you have decided that Chex Systems is the reason you are not getting approved for a new checking account, look for a list of second chance checking banks, choose the best one, and apply.
