Openbravo Forge launches to become central hub for Openbravo project development

– Openbravo’s Forge collaborative development infrastructure is designed to help conduct more effective development and customization –

Barcelona, Spain (April 02, 2009) – Openbravo, the leading developer of web-based open source Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) and Point of Sale (POS) solutions for businesses, announced the launch of Openbravo Forge, a new place for the community to gather and develop Openbravo’s projects and related add-ons.

The goal of the new Openbravo Forge will be to make it easier for community members to develop industry vertical templates, modules and localizations, both for the public at large and for private commercial use. It will host a central repository of all of the modules that are developed for the software, building on the modularity concept that Openbravo ERP 2.50 introduces. On top of all of this, there will be a directory of all of the available projects for both Openbravo ERP and POS. Each project will be able to have forums, news, downloads, bug tracking, code repository, Wiki. Registering a project in the Forge is a pre-requisite to be listed in the central repository of Openbravo add-ons. All community members will be able to create public projects for free. Additionally, official Openbravo partners will be able to register private projects, and use the Forge infrastructure to manage implementation projects.

The Forge will also be a place that will recognize the valuable contributions of Openbravo’s individual community developers. Each user will have a karma rating, which measures their communication and development activities. They will be able to keep track of their favorite projects more easily through updates via RSS feeds, Google Gadgets or email. Developers will be able use the site to help their license and support sales by placing their own ads in web stores.

After a long period dominating SourceForge’s activity rankings, Openbravo abandoned SourceForge as the main community collaboration tool. Openbravo’s Forge will replace the Openbravo project sites on SourceForge, and will offer more options than were previously available. It is free to register and participate in. Openbravo Forge is located at http://forge.openbravo.com.

Manel Sarasa, CEO of Openbravo, said “Openbravo Forge complements our strategy to empower our ecosystem. The release of Openbravo ERP 2.50 brings modularity, which the new community Forge will take full advantage of. Our product has been rapidly advancing, and so this move was a natural extension for the growth of the developer community.”

Paolo Juvara, CTO of Openbravo, added “Openbravo Forge and Openbravo ERP 2. 50 are two key elements we have been working for fuelling the creation of a dynamic ecosystem. Openbravo Forge provides the tools to develop Openbravo modules, localizations and other extensions and make them available to our community”.
